McCain Support: Love of Country vs Ego

Burt Prelutsky says it best about John McCain's possible GOP nomination:

What truly confounds me are those cuckoos who would prefer to see such Socialists as Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama win the election than to sully themselves by voting for a Republican who was only their second or third or even fourth choice. To them I say, before proving that you place your own ego gratification above what’s best for America, keep in mind that most of the Supreme Court justices are in their 70s or even, in the case of John Paul Stewart, fast approaching 90. Do you really want one of those two Democrats stacking the Court for the foreseeable future? Presidents come and go, but justices go on seemingly forever. Kennedy and Scalia have been on the bench since Reagan put them there.

Conservatives vowing to sit this election out if John McCain is the nomination are choosing their ego over the love of country.  Why would you let America be destroyed by Hillbama?  So you feel better about not voting for McCain.  Well put Burt!

A Challenge to Anti-McCain Conservatives

I propose this challenge to you.  Make a list of all issues you care about.  Some are going to be a higher priority than others but just make the list that is important to you.  Abortion, immigration, taxes, vouchers, education, health care, gun control, campaign finance reform, international trade, Iraq, Iran, terrorism, torture, budget, environment, religion, gay marriage,  etc.  I just threw out several to help.  Complete you list and set it aside.

Now do some research.  To get a list of John McCain's positions go to his web site On The Issues for his platform.  Now visit Clinton and Obama's positions on their web site.  You might not get all the answers to your issues but that is a plan to start at least.

Now keep a tally of how many times you agree with John McCain and then anyone of the Democrats.  Do you think that Hillary or Barak would honestly be more productive option for you?  Your list with McCain will most likely be in agreement on the majority of your issues.  You won’t find someone who will agree with you 100% of the time.  Is letting your list getting trampled by the Democrats really worth it?  Remember, they have control of the House and Senate too.

Tuesday will show the major direction of where the nomination will go.  I am supporting McCain but even if it happens to be Romney I would back him 100% in a challenge against any Democrat.  You may be able to remember back to when Bill Clinton was running in 1992. Ross Perot neutralized the GOP vote and taking enough votes for Bush.  You might not have been a fan of George H. W. Bush but he was a better option that Billy.  Think about that in November if McCain is the nominee and remember what is at stake.

Talk Radio Hosts vs McCain

There is a reason that Michael Medved is one of my favorite radio show hosts.  He is an intellectual who is a rational debater and allows plenty of dissenting opinion on The Michael Medved Show.  When McCain was starting to get realistic support for the GOP nomination for President, he was the first to point out that he would have been a good prospect for president.

Sadly, there have been few and far talk radio hosts who have sided this way.  Medved has recently been joined by Mike Gallagher.  Other than that, I don't think many others in talk radio have supported McCain.  Even Ann Coulter has stated she would campaign for Clinton if McCain gets the nomination.  It has gone that far now.  I don't know how serious Ann is but I guess she has restated this claim again.  Rush Limbaugh has come close to saying he would sit the election out with a McCain nomination.  Sean Hannity thinks that McCain might move us in the wrong direction.  Hugh Hewitt also feels the same way.

I am waiting for this to play out but let's be real, McCain is hands down a better option that Clinton or Obama.  Yes, McCain has some positions I don't like but he is by no means a liberal.

Why all the McCain Disdain?

I am stunned at how many fellow conservatives are getting so worked up about Senator John McCain becoming the GOP nominee for President of the United States.  Accusations that he is RINO (Republican In Name Only), a donkey in elephant clothes is how one fellow blogger put it.

I think we have to look back and really think about what McCain stands for.  I think any past or present GOP nominee for 2008 (Ron Paul excluded) would be a great option as President.  If he does get the nomination is sitting it out really worth giving Democrats complete power of the Executive and Legislative branches.  Really think about your answer.

Some of you point out things on McCain such as immigration, global warming not passing tax cuts in 2001 as reasons for non-support about how McCain will govern.  I have to agree with you those who dislike McCain that some stances I don't like with him.  But to call him a liberal?  Really?  Here are some facts about how McCain is a great conservative candidate.  Try to find this much in agreement with Obama or Clinton.  Some of this will redundant but you get the point.

Other Stances from Wikipedia:

Other great moments reflecting a conservative candidate:
Calling out Michael Moore at the GOP 2004 Convention as a "disingenuous filmmaker" while he was in attendance
Bring back the popularity of the Bomb Iran song
Trading jobs with
Barbara Streisand

I have to admit, I would lean to McCain over Romney.  I think Mitt is a good leader too.  I have no problem with people who want to support Mitt.  Mitt himself has a few flip flopping flaws of his own.  But you have to believe he would support McCain as a nominee.  Ronald Reagan helped Gerald Ford campaign as McCain did for Bush in 2000 and 2004.

If McCain wins the nomination, would you really believe he is a liberal?  If you want a candidate who agrees with you 100% of the time, you can only vote for yourself.
